Queen of Hearts

Today’s post is from 1979, a lovely wooden kids puzzle from the nursery rhymes collection from Victory. What a treasure! These little vintage wooden puzzles are so beautiful and unique. They’re made from plywood, which I certainly find to be pretty interesting. That’s not the usual choice for most wooden puzzles.

But I feel like that’s what makes these so unique.

The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts, all on a summer’s day.

The knave of Hearts, he stole the tarts, and took them clean away.

I’d never heard that nursery rhyme before. I did really like that they actually printed it on the inside of the box lid. So maybe if you didn’t know it, you could read it, or memorize it while you’re puzzling.

I’m not totally convinced that the queen herself made the tarts. I believe that I see a woman dressed an awful lot like a cook or chef from the time chasing the thief in this picture.

My guess is that the chef made them, for the Queen. Let’s just get that straight, ha ha ha!

This little puzzle is 20 pieces and complete. The box is showing its age and there is a little chip on one of the pieces, but for a 45 year old puzzle, I think that’s pretty good.

I have another one of these from the same series, stay tuned to see what nursery rhyme that will be!
