Beyond the Kelp

Today’s feature is a puzzle that I was looking forward to but I am sad to say that it fell a little flat for me.

I very rarely am let down by a puzzle, honestly. I love puzzles, why else would I have a blog that only talks about puzzles?

This is a contemporary company called Odd Pieces, they have a twist to them, I was expecting more of a mystery or some kind of riddle you’d have to solve once the puzzle was complete. But it turned out to be a different theme all together.

There was a little comic that is meant to be the starting point.

My thoughts here, there didn’t really seem to be a story, more just an introduction of characters and a little world underwater.

Then you’re meant to assemble the puzzle, which I did.

Here it is, the image is similar but different as the image you see on the box. And now, what, what’s the gimmick?

Well, there’s no puzzle or mystery to solve, but there is a spot the difference game or an eye spy kind of game. I don’t know, that just felt kind of anticlimactic to me. The comic didn’t get me invested in the game or these little characters, whatsoever. So once the puzzle was assembled, which was a tough one, by the way, I just didn’t even care to find what they want you to find.

Am I missing something here? I mean, the envelope says, your adventure starts here, but once I was done the puzzle it just felt like a bit of a sad trombone moment.

Why? Well I personally feel that when you’re solving a puzzle, you’re spotting the details as you’re looking for pieces. Having a checklist of “hidden stories” to find once you’re finished just defeats the whole purpose. It’s not like once the last piece is placed, you are struck with some complete image that suddenly all came together with that final piece.

I have no idea what these puzzles cost when purchased new, but with all the extra bits in the box, I’d have to imagine that it’s not cheap. I just wouldn’t buy it brand new, based off of this experience, again it seemed like the twist or quirk just fell off the edge for me.

The quality of the puzzle was fine, I had the odd false fit, it felt a tad crumbly but the pieces felt strong and nice quality cardboard. I did really like the colour palette and that is really what drew me in to this puzzle. I was optimistic about the unknown element to the whole thing but that was a disappointment the say the least.

I’m not saying don’t buy it, but I am saying that I won’t seek out more from this line of puzzles. I found this at a Value Village a while back, I tried it, I didn’t pay full price, and I have moved on from it. The bulky box has now left my collection and I feel better for it!

So there you have it, my thoughts.
