Manet – in the Café

It’s sometimes hard to picture these older painters’ works as modern, challenging, and controversial. But sometimes, in their era they really were! I confess, I don’t know all that much about Edouard Manet, probably mostly being overshadowed and mispronounced as Monet in our day and age, but he did have some pretty famous paintings.

Probably most notable being “A Bar at the Folies-Bergère“ which was one of his last paintings.

I also have to confess that I bought this mostly for the fact that it was a vintage Ravensburger puzzle, which are just such nice quality, I can’t help it!

I actually had a hunch that I would appreciate the painting more after I had put it together in puzzle form, and well, I was right.

I was especially impressed with colour detailing in the woman’s dress, the black with the blue and rust brown details. You get the sense that it might even be a silk taffeta fabric, how amazing!

The quality, naturally, was great. It always is.

This is a 500 piece vintage Ravensburger puzzle from 1991, made in “West Germany” still, and it is complete!

I really enjoyed putting this together too, I know a lot of people are very put off by dark colours in puzzles, but honestly, if it’s good quality and the pieces are unique, it’s not an issue for me. I also think that images with some colour contrast make some gorgeous final pictures.

Controversial hot take? What do you think?
