Emigrants Crossing the Plains

Today’s puzzle features a lovely colour exploration in the form of classical art. This is not my usual style of puzzle, I’ll admit that, but the sky depicted in this painting was too beautiful for me to pass up.

Also the fact that this is a 1975 release from Springbok, I had to check it out. The early era of Springbok is just so luxurious. The pieces are so sturdy and they fit together absolutely perfectly, its a true delight!

The painters name is Albert Bierstadt, he was one of the early Europeans that began trekking across North America and seeing the awe inspiring landscape and wilderness of the continent. Seeing land that hadn’t yet been affected by settler activity, there were no frontier towns, or railways, he focused on the power of nature and landscape in his paintings.

There is a write up on the back of the box, and I will say that it is true to the time that it was written, using words like “taming” the wilderness. I honestly just hate that because these types of write ups or blurbs totally omitted the presence of the indigenous population. Essentially denying they were even present at the time, and not acknowledging the way their communities were set up and how people lived their lives in these amazing locations across the continent.

This puzzle was a delight to put together for both it’s quality and that stunning gradient sky. It is 500 pieces, complete and in wonderful condition.

As I was assembling it, I could help but be reminded of Springbok’s Free Spirit from 1981, same but different, you know?
