Recently found! One of my favourite lines of one of my favourite vintage puzzle companies. Dorset from Milton Bradley. These round puzzles were released in the late 1960’s and they always feature a landscape shot, a look back into time.
A few aspects to this line of puzzles that I absolutely love are the box and box design, I really love the quality of the pieces and their fit. I have to say that it’s prefect, it’s a perfect fit. There is also a soft almost waxy finish to these pieces that give the final picture a gorgeous finish, it’s matte with the slightest bit of sheen.
This puzzle was missing 4 pieces, sadly, but that did not matter to me, this was just so fun and I just focused in on the beautiful quality of these special vintage puzzles. I’ve only ever some across 2 of these Dorset Round puzzles before – Mountain Hamlet which was missing a few pieces as well as the complete and stunning Mediterranean Bay.
Another really special feature to this particular puzzle is the original store’s price tag in the top right corner, for 84 cents! I love it, it’s giant too! According to the Bank of Canada’s inflation calculator, 84 cents in 1968 would be roughly $7.59 in todays currency. That is certainly not the going rate for a brand new puzzle these days, it really makes you wonder what the actual manufacturing costs were back then vs. now. Factor in artist fees, shipping and environmental costs, resources, like paper pulp, ink and water usage during the making of puzzles. I do wonder what the actual cost of a puzzle is!
