“To My One Desire”

Early release Springbok are among some of the best puzzles that I have had the pleasure of putting together. I came across this puzzle a couple of years ago and once again, I waited to assemble it. Typical!

This lovely medieval and fantastical artwork is actually a tapestry! Hopefully, you can see in the images above that this is “one of the six tapestries of the Lady and the Unicorn” story. Obviously, I’m so happy to have found a puzzle of textile artwork, if you weren’t aware, the textile arts are one of my favourite mediums. I am always in awe of the versatility of the fibre arts, it’s so mind blowing to me the detailing that is possible.

Now let’s zoom in to check out some of these characters!

Starting with this unicorn, the horn is huge! I adore his little goatee too, I think medieval unicorns are some of my all time favourites.

I love the details on the dress, I guess this woman must be royalty of some sort. Apparently the smaller tapestries in this series seem to embody the senses and this main tapestry she is putting the necklace that she’s wearing in the other scenes away in a box. Some people think this represents her renunciation of the passions that are aroused by the other senses, as an assertion of free will. I’m not sure of that, but then I’m not an art historian and interpreter!

This dog! I’ve talked before about how much I adore this era of animal portrayal in art, their faces are very human in their representation, it’s too good.

This incredible gem dates back to 1969 and I was so happy to place that last piece into place, revealing a complete image in absolutely perfect condition. What a joy!

Check out some other puzzles from Springbok released in the same year: Gotham News, International Horse Jumping and Mosaic of Bacchus.
