If you’ve been here a while, you will know that I love to puzzle the busy illustrative art of Robert Blair Martin. From the mind that brought us Verticalville (1977), Verticalville II (1986), Computers: The Inside Story (1982), and the Putt Putt Puzzle (1985) comes Super Dome Sunday. I found this at a thrift store and pounced on it, no one was going to beat me to the punch here.
I am not into American Football in the slightest, but that is not the point here, the point is the illustration style. Bob Martin’s artwork just always makes for such a fun time! There are so many bright colours and silly little details to pick out and find in all the chaos.
In this particular drawing, we have multiple freeways and ramps that all seem to lead to the stadium, which doesn’t seem that large, to be honest. I’m not quite sure where all these people are going to park their vehicles and get inside the stadium, but we can suspend our disbelief.
My favourite details were actually all the areas to side of the roads, you may have noticed a camping scene, with a bear (highly unlikely around all this traffic!) I really like the break-dancers practicing their head spins, and seeing people canoeing on the small body of water below the ramps.
Even the aliens follow Football.
Overall, I was delighted to find this one and to get the chance to assemble it. This dates back to 1985 and my copy is complete!
